2026년 이수정 선생의 순교 140주년을 기념해 자료집 발간을 추진하고 있는 ‘이수정 순교 140주년기념자료집발간위원회(위원장 서부지역노회장협의회장 주문창 목사)’가 “개화기 성서 번역가이자 조선의 마게도냐인으로 언더우드, 아펜젤러 등 선교사들의 첫 내한에 공헌한 이수정(李樹廷, Rijutei, 1842~1886) 선생이 1883년~1884년초 초 일본에서 기독교 개종 후 집필한 한시 7편의 영어본이 묶음으로 온전히 발굴되어 공개한다”고 밝혔다.
학계에는 미국 성서공회 기관지(Bible Society Record. 1884년 3월 20일)에 실린 2편의 시 정도만 단편적으로 알려져 있었으나, 이번 연구를 통해 1884년 2월 21일자 미국 기독교 주간지 ‘더 뉴욕 에반젤리스트(The New-York Evangelist)’에 게재된 7편의 시문학 유산 전체가 묶음으로 발견된 것이다.
이수정 선생의 영적 고백이 담긴 찬송이 “이수정(Rijutei)”이라는 곡명으로 미국 개신교 네트워크를 통해 실제로 미국 성도들에게 애창되며 선교를 촉구하는 매체로 쓰였음을 증명하는 중대한 교회사적 발견으로 평가된다. 교회사적으로 큰 의미가 있는 이번 연구 결과를 미션21이 3~4회에 걸쳐 게재한다. /편집자 주

이번에 발굴된 이수정 원작 7편의 영역본 시들과 그 한글역본, 그리고 곡명 ‘RIJUTEI’(이수정) 찬송의 악보 등이 현재 발간 준비 중인 <이수정 순교 140주년 기념 자료집>에도 수록이 될 예정입니다.
이 희귀한 찬송곡이 이수정 순교 140주년을 맞아 한국 교회에서 널리 찬송되기를 바랍니다.

THOUGHTS AND POEMS OF RIJUTEI.
There is in Tokio a distinguished scholar, who is regarded as one of the leading teachers in Japan. For some years he has been a teacher of the Chinese language, and also the head of the Normal School for Girls, established under the patronage of the Empress. A short time since he wrote a poem in Chinese, which appeared in one of the newspapers. He has been a professed Christian; but there was no Christian thought in the poem. When Rijutei had read it, he wrote to the author as follows:
“It is about ten months since I came to your honorable country [from Corea]. Seeing different places, and visiting teachers, and for a time reading many new books, I had no time to compose any poems. Often poetic thoughts came into my mind, but seldom have I finished any such productions. It is like a rainbow when cut into half, and the thoughts do not remain.
Men often come to me to ask me to compose something, and as I am not skillful to write, I excuse myself. But often they will not accept an excuse, because it is just like a stone or tree from a strange country, which people value because it comes from a distant land, and without any regard for their want of beauty or real worth.
I hear people say that the writings of a Corean are like charms for avoiding any disaster, and it is the reason why many ask for my writing; but this is very foolish. When I am about to write anything, I am often perplexed as to what to write, because I compose very poor poems. One of these was published in the Yubin Shimbun, and many learned men praised it. But when I saw the paper, I was much surprised and ashamed.
Now I have read one of your poems, and I am very glad. I hear that your good name is noted as a teacher of morality, and your writings circulate everywhere. The words of noble men are very sweet to the taste. I have heard of you, and desired for a long time to meet you personally, but have not had an opportunity of doing so. But the reading of your poem is like looking into your face.
It is very strange that a man meeting a happy thing becomes very sad, and living in a lonely spot thinks it is a good place. But I am far away from my country and kindred, and recently I joyfully received religion. It is now my greatest desire to introduce the Gospel of the kingdom of God into my country, and to serve my king and people. But growing up among bad customs, I am not fitted for such a work, and I must ask for the help of God.
I have composed some very poor poems. They have no taste or merit, and it is my purpose just to express the thoughts and desires of my heart. If these words of a rustic countryman receive one favoring glance, I shall be most happy.”
